One of the easiest ways to tell that something is wrong with your air conditioner is by listening to it. It’s a bad sign to hear a completely new sound that you don’t hear as part of normal, everyday operation.
Examples of this include clicking, rattling or humming. Other loud sounds may include banging, screeching or knocking that happen less frequently, but sound equally concerning. The bottom line is, any sounds that are not a part of regular operation are worth a call to our team for a checkup.
Bad Odors
You should also be wary of bad odors coming from your air conditioner. You can stand near an air vent while your air conditioner is an operation and smell the air coming out. If it produces any smell at all, that is a problem.

As the summer season winds down and temperatures begin to cool off, you may not pay as much attention to how cool the air is coming from your air conditioner. But when you have your thermostat set to cooling, the air coming from your vents should always be cold.
If you hold your hand up to an air vent and feel air that is lukewarm then your air conditioner may have something wrong. It’s possible that you have a refrigerant leak or other problem preventing your air conditioner from cooling the air as much as it should.
Changes in Operation
Any other changes in operation can also indicate that your air conditioner is reaching the end of its lifespan. Changes may include how often it turns on and off for cooling cycles. Your air conditioner should always have consistent cooling cycles that stay on for around 15 to 20 minutes before cycling back off for an equal period of time.
If your air conditioner begins to turn on and off frequently, or turn on and stay on without turning off between cooling cycles, something is wrong. It’s also possible that you begin to notice changes in how much airflow you feel coming out of the vents. Weak airflow can mean that there is either a blockage somewhere in the system or that your ductwork has enough holes that air is escaping before it ever has a chance to reach your home.
